Serbia is one of the world's richest areas for its natural healing factors, with about 300 of them known so far, as well as examined springs of different curative mineral waters, and over 20 health resorts with exceptional healing and ecological values.
Mineral waters are very diverse, and their characteristics and water abundance mainly depend on the geological composition in the area. Some springs appear even in regions located over 500 m above sea level, which is exceptionally rare in the world. A great number of curative springs were already known in Roman times. Chemical composition and physical properties of the water, which determine its balneological characteristics and use, are very diverse. There are several types of spring water: cold, warm, hot, acid, basic, neutral, barely or highly mineralized, and enriched with various chemical substances and oligo-elements.
Most of these waters have different application possibilities and a wide range of indications, while they all respond to almost all contemporary diseases.
Springs are often accompanied with medicinal gases and mud, as a result of interaction of waters and soil in their surroundings. The appearance of curative radioactive waters is also not unusual. Some wells are rather powerful and enormous quantity of water springs out of them in the form of fountain or geyser.
Since the ancient times, settlements were established in the near vicinity of some springs. Some of them date back from Roman times. The majority of them were arranged, and urbanely and balneologically defined in the second half of the 19th century. As early as 1914, the special Law on Spas and Health Resorts was passed, prescribing all regulations and vital aspects of this significant activity, which was the main tourist offer of Serbia between the two World Wars.
Spas are located in the pleasant valleys or on the hill slopes, surrounded by forests, meadows, and orchards. Their natural scenery is embellished with well-kept surroundings, parks, and footpaths. Modern accommodation facilities, monuments, parks, sport fields, and swimming pools, turned the spas into cultural and entertainment centres, as well as centres for sport and recreation.
Climatic resorts are not numerous, but they are not far behind the spas as regarding their significance and potential. They are situated at different heights, from 450 to 1,500 m above sea level, and have accessible relief configuration, with diverse vegetation and sub-Alpine climate, which is extremely beneficial for human health.
This is why these resorts are suitable for recovery, relaxation, and treatment of different diseases, as well as for athletes' preparations. They are abundant with fresh air, great number of sunny days per year, and favourable ionic structure of atmosphere. The climate is dry, with mild winters and fresh summers, without strong winds, fog, and long rainy periods.
Articles, photos, and charts explain specific characteristics of environmental conditions, as well as the quality of the entire infrastructure, thus stipulating and specifying the offer of spas and climatic resorts.
It should be pointed out that none of these places has any contraindications for human health, and that all of them are provided with suitable technical and accommodation facilities, as well as personnel with an extensive experience not only in treatment, but also in recovery and relaxation of people.
Careful reader will easily find many reasons to spend time in some of these places.
