Malta does not stricktly fit into the category of summer resorts for swimming purposes solely. Even the photo of the tourist centre differs from a series of ordinary hotels one may encounter in other summer resorts. Most of the hotels here form part of the landscape of towns and villages on Malta and Gozo.
There is no other place in the world of such size with such a great number of cultural monuments, masterpieces of architecture and art taking us back to the very roots of mankind. The island is situated in midst of the Mediterannean, between Europe and Africa. The rulers of Malta had control over the entire Mediterannean. Therefore, the reasons for conquering Malta are not surprising: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, the Order of Knights of St. John the Baptist, the French and ultimately the British who left Malta in year 1964, when it gained its independence.
Long before the arrival of the Phoenicians, Malta was inhabited by prehistoric people with a misterious culture and religion. These people admired Godess Mother Earth ASHTROT. In her honour they erected impressive temples which they used huge rocks for. The remains of these temples may still be found in various parts of the island.
The Order of the Knights of St. John the Baptist ruled Malta for almost 250 years. Islam forces drove them out from Jerusalem back to Rhodos. Over time, they had been dislodged by the Ottoman Empire soldiers, so Malta became their place of residence. Soon upon arrival, they restored the old fortifications damaged through the assaults of the pirates.
In year 1565, the Order of Knights of St. John the Baptist, along with the courageous Maltese people succeeded in resisting the attack of over 40.000 Turks under the command of the Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. After the victory, the Knights become heroes of the entire Europe. A substantial amount of money and other donations has been received from all European countries with the aim of making Malta an invincible fortification, in order to defend the seat of the Knights and the whole Southern Europe from further military advances of the Turks.
Trade, arts and science were booming rapidly and the small fort of Valetta was built as the result of such inspiring efforts.
Malta is a tourist destination offering a multitude of possibilities in all aspects of its tourist offer.
